Abstract

Through geographical information systems (GIS) it is possible to analyze biological and environmental variables in order to generate geographical distribution predictive models, useful today in biogeography, genetics, conservation and evolutionary biology studies. Farfán-Roldán et al. (2006) described a new hybrid between Pleopeltis polylepis var. polylepis and Polypodium guttatum, which was collected in the Parque Nacional El Chico, Hidalgo. After their paper, the interest to study the parental distribution patterns in order to get sympatric areas was arisen. To reach that goal we achieved two different approaches: the first one was the analysis of geographical distributions of parents, supported by georeferenced specimens from several herbaria, which were located in a Mexican Republic map, with one grid of half degree, the second was the probability distribution areas determined with bioclimatic variables analysis, supported by DIVA-GIS program. This work proposes five sympatric distribution areas where we could find the hybrid, the first area is in Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Coahuila, the second in Guanajuato, Jalisco and Zacatecas; the third in Querétaro, San Luis Potosi and Guanajuato; another one in Hidalgo, Estado de México, Michoacán y Distrito Federal; the last in Hidalgo, Puebla y Tlaxcala. The hybrid development could be possible because the similar habits and phylogenetic proximity of the parental ancestors.
