The genus Gentianopsis (Gentianaceae) is distributed in temperate and cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In Mexico there is one species with two varieties, one endemic and the other reaching the southwestern United States. The two varieties are presented as new nomenclatural combinations: Gentianopsis detonsa (Rottb.) Ma var. lanceolata (Benth.) Villarreal et A.E. Estrada y G.d. (Rottb.) Ma var. superba (Greene) Villarreal & A.E. Estrada. A synopsis of the genus is given; it includes keys to identify the taxa, descriptions, and ecological and distributional information.
