This article illustrates how the third Peronist government, specifically its Plan Trienal, developed a new approach to the issue of consumption that departed from previous government policies and even from postwar Peronism. With the aim of stimulating income redistribution and increasing savings without disturbing the balance of payments, the Peronist government sought to wean the country from imitating foreign consumption patterns. In doing so, the Trienal Plan placed special emphasis on upper and middle class consumption. While this approach shared some aspects with economists such as Prebisch and Ferrer, the main findings presented here suggest a direct link between these ideas and the debates around development styles. In Latin America, Oscar Varsavsky and the scientists gathered around the Fundación Bariloche were particularly active in those discussions, arguing against the analysis presented by the Club of Rome.
