PIQUEIRAS, Paloma  e  CANEL, María José. The Impact of the Intangible Resource “Citizen Engagement” on the Growth of Nations: Analysis of 16 Countries from the European Union. Gest. polít. pública [online]. 2025, vol.34, n.2, pp.1-28.  Epub 09-Jan-2026. ISSN 1405-1079.  https://doi.org/10.60583/gypp.v34i2.8475.

Although academic literature has assured that the growth of organizations (also of public ones) is influenced by the management of their intangible assets (Sztompka, 1999), traditionally it has only been the corporate sector that has dedicated attention and resources to them. This article shows that public management of intangibles, and more specifically of citizen engagement, is key to increasing the wealth of nations. Based on previous research (Piqueiras, 2019, 2020; Piqueiras and Canel, 2021), the influence of citizen engagement on the wealth of 16 countries is identified through a linear regression model that allows to link each specific component of this resource. The findings establish a direct and positive relationship between GDP per capita and the level of citizen engagement that the public administration is able to build in its citizens. Findings provide clues to better gear public management to the development of wealth through building this intangible resource.
