Abstract
FLORES ORONA, Carlos Heriberto; SAAVEDRA LEYVA, Rafael Eduardo and MARTINEZ SIDON, Gilberto. Analysis of the Contribution of Public Spending on Security in Mitigating Crime in the States of Mexico. Gest. polít. pública [online]. 2022, vol.31, n.1, pp.31-55. Epub Aug 25, 2023. ISSN 1405-1079. https://doi.org/10.29265/gypp.v31i1.1012.
The objective of this article is to analyze the contribution that public spending for security has in mitigating crime in the states of Mexico. From the empirical theory, the debate remains as to whether the higher spending on security actually contributes to the decrease in crime. To reach the objective, a balanced micro panel is used. Multiple crime variables are used to contrast the results and strengthen the conclusions. Likewise, salary, education and unemployment are used as control variables and explanatory of crime. The results suggest that there is a negative and statistically significant relationship between public spending on security and the decrease in criminal activity. Likewise, a higher salary contributes to the mitigation of crimes, crimes against property and crimes against personal freedom.
