URUENA CALDERON, Juan Felipe. Image, Concept, and Metaphor. On the Figure of the Carguero (Human Carrier) in the Republic of New Granada during the First Half of the 19th Century. Hist. graf [online]. 2025, n.64, pp.301-341. Epub 25-Fev-2025. ISSN 1405-0927. https://doi.org/10.48102/hyg.vi64.549.
This article explores how images, concepts, and metaphors interact in the historical and visual context, focusing on the “carguero” in Colombia. This figure, with pre-Hispanic roots and colonial evolution, exposes political and social tensions through its artistic and literary representation. A dialogue is established with the theories of Reinhart Koselleck, Aby Warburg, and Hans Blumenberg to explore the preconceptual space of sensitive experience that oscillates between immediacy and distance. From the perspective of metaphorology, this space facilitates the coordination and tension of key political concepts such as freedom, citizenship, work, and independence. Simultaneously, from the viewpoint of unconceptuality, it reveals the paradoxical and contradictory nature of the relationships of meaning in modern social organization modes. This duality not only reflects the breakdown of the hierarchical order of the old regime but also the paradoxical experience of modern politics, where anachronistic figures like the carguero demonstrate both power and the restrictions imposed on subaltern subjects.
