Abstract

This study investigates the presence and molecular biology of Ips apache in the Sierra de San Juan State Biosphere Reserve, Nayarit, México. Specimens were collected from Pinus oocarpa, and their identification was confirmed through both morphological and molecular analyses with a 97.76% match to I. apache sequences in Genbank. The phylogenetic analyses revealed a monophyletic group with high support Bootstrap 99% and permitted to distinguish relationships with other species of Ips gender. Although no other infested trees were observed, fallen trees by man-made causes were recorded. Ips apache behaves as a secondary species, colonizing fallen trees. This research contributes to the monitoring of ecologically and economically important organisms on the pine forest and enhances our understanding of the region´s entomofauna.
