Abstract

The forest’s role in carbon sequestration in the evaluation of necromass and understory biomass has been minimized. The purpose of this research, located in the Hueyapa River microwathershed, was to estimate the biomass and carbon of the necromass and undergrowth of the temperate ecosystem. A forest inventory was carried out in 2761.9 ha of temperate forest in the microwathershed using the methodology of the National Forest and Soil Inventory of Mexico. Standing dead trees (SDT), fallen woody material (FWM), understory and leaf litter on the forest floor were measured. From February 2017 to January 2018, the fall of foliage and other plant organs were collected in one-square-meter traps. Stored carbon was calculated using biomass conversion factors in each compartment. The estimated carbon, expressed in megagrams per hectare, was 0.89, 1.25, 0.61 and 4.52 in SDT, FWM, understory and litter, respectively. The fall of foliage and other plant organs provided 4.52 Mg ha-1 year-1 ± 0.44 Mg ha-1 year-1 of carbon. These estimates represent a baseline for future research on global climate change mitigation and the productivity of temperate forests in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.
