SCHWEMBER, Felipe  e  FUENTES CARO, Eduardo. The Abolition of Politics. The Tension Between Democracy and Robert Nozick’s Libertarian Utopia. Isonomía [online]. 2025, n.63, pp.232-260.  Epub 20-Fev-2026. ISSN 1405-0218.  https://doi.org/10.5347/isonomia.63/2025./834.

Democracy has been the subject of criticism by numerous libertarian authors. This paper focuses on the critique proposed by Robert Nozick in Anarchy, State, and Utopia, which argues that this form of government ultimately leads to the destruction of liberty. In this regard, two arguments will be presented: first, that the plausibility of this critique rests on certain controversial assumptions about political representation —assumptions that, surprisingly, Nozick shares with Rousseau; and second, that the strength of Nozick’s critique relies on a particular conception of the people, one that renders not only democracy but also reflection on political freedom as a whole superfluous.

Palavras-chave : libertarianism; democracy; utopia; representation; people.
