Background:

Overweight and obesity are such a problem for public health, it cause low or retirement for the Mexican Army. The Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional in Mexico apply a program to attend this issue, which lacks evaluation.

Objective:

The objective was to evaluate the process in the implementation of the program.

Material and method:

It was an observational, descriptive, exploratory and transversal research, with mixed methodology, at the military hospital of Cuernavaca, Morelos in 2017. A sample of 35 observations was used for the statistical analysis and an intentional sampling for qualitative information. Measures of central tendency and prevalence were described; the main variables were sex, military degree and number of activities. Statistical tests of Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon and Chi2 tests were used by Stata V12. Semi-estructured interviews and check lists were analized.

Results:

Of the users, 80 % were man and 48 % belong to the Military hospital. There was a 64.5 % compliance of the program. No statistical significant differences between the variables were found. There were found the main barriers: excess of job and lack of interest; the main facilitators were motivation, participation on promotional curses and equipment for physical activity. The causes were: lack of communication on multidisciplinary workers and lack of interest by the users.

Conclusion:

The program is not implemented by its totality. With the obtained results it is expected that decisionmakers make resolutions to improve the implementation of the program.
