MARTINEZ ROMERO, Gisela et al. Gallbladder mucocele in a dog: clinical and pathological findings. Vet. Méx [online]. 2008, vol.39, n.3, pp.335-340. ISSN 0301-5092.
The aim of this work is to describe the clinical and pathological findings in a dog with gallbladder mucocele, in order to contribute to study this rare disease. The clinical case corresponds to a twelve-year-old, male, German Shepherd dog that presented jaundice and acute abdominal pain. Blood biochemistry revealed increased liver enzymes, hyperbilirrubinemia and hypercholesterolemia. The ultrasonography study showed gallbladder wall thickening and ecogenic uniform sediment, interpreted as biliary sludge. The dog was euthanized due to his poor condition. At necropsy it was found gallbladder mucocele and the histopathological diagnosis was biliary cystic mucinous hyperplasia. This pathology should be considered as a differential clinical diagnosis of any hepatobiliary disease accompanied by cholestasis. Ultrasonography is the main tool for the diagnosis of gallbladder mucocele and the recommended treatment is cholecystectomy.
