Background:
Squids are an important fishery resource around the world. According to references, which, generally, are not based on formal records, there are 117 species of squids in Mexico. Although taxonomic efforts to study squids from Mexico exist, research that allow the correct determination of species are still required.
Goals:
Make a catalogue of the species of squids inhabiting Mexican waters using specimens housed at the Colección de Peces e Invertebrados Marinos y Estuarinos of Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas (CPIME-ENCB), Instituto Politécnico Nacional.
Methods:
To identify specimens, we used taxonomic keys and descriptions.
Results:
The collection has 420 specimens corresponding to 2 orders (Myopsida and Oegopsida), 4 families (Loliginidae, Cranchidae, Enoploteuthidae and Ommastrephidae) and 13 species. Most individuals were collected in the Gulf of California and southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
Conclusions:
Geographic distribution range of Lolliguncula diomedeae was extended to Northwest of Baja California peninsula.
