Background:
In Mexico, four species of freshwater amphipods of the genus Hyalella have been reported in 14 states of the republic, however, the state of Morelos had no previous record.
Objectives:
The aim of this work was to address a new record of Hyalella azteca in Morelos, Mexico.
Methods:
The amphipods were collected in water springs near to Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, and preserved in 70% alcohol.
Results:
H. azteca was recognized with the aid of morphological characteristics along with variations such as the distance of the setae in the tip of telson and a large lobe in the posterodistal margin of gnathopod 2.
Conclusions:
This is the first record of the species in the state of Morelos, Mexico.
