This paper analyzes the role of independent candidates for their first performance in the presidential elections of 2018, after their recent incorporation into the Mexican electoral system. The theoretical analysis includes a critical review of the main arguments that supported their legal recognition, as well as a review of the legislation that regulates them, in order to explain their social function in a context of crisis of representation, but also their strategic and decisive role in the partisan electoral contests.
