To generate an explanatory model it is required to know if relationship exists among the involved variables. This work has for objective to illustrate, by means of a case study, the followed process to identify and to validate statistically the possible relationships that exist among variables. It is analyzed the behavior of the proportion of undernourishment population of Latin America and its relationship between two variables: 1. food production; and 2. its prices in Latin American countries of 2000-2002 period. The results and conclusions are sustained by statistical tests.
