Abstract

SALOMONE, Mariano J.. Fracking in Mendoza, an extreme initiative. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2021, vol.29, n.57, pp.85-108.  Epub Sep 06, 2021. ISSN 0188-7653.  https://doi.org/10.18504/pl2957-004-2021.

Since 2017, the government of Mendoza boosts the exploitation of non-conventional hydrocarbons in mid-western Argentina by the use of fracking. This paper analyzes the dominant narrative that supports this initiative, highlighting two characteristics: it is a development strategy presented as the result of the compulsive force of facts (an inexorable reality); any resistance to fracking is reported as an obstacle to development (sheer irrationality). The methodology consists of tracking the local printed media and public documents of the government and business sector.

Keywords : dominant discourse; fracking; Mendoza; dispossession; social conflict; development; natural commons.
