Abstract

TOSONI, María Magdalena. Notas sobre el clientelismo político en la ciudad de México. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2007, vol.14, n.29, pp.47-69. ISSN 0188-7653.

This paper explores the exchange of votes for favors between the urban poor and political parties in Mexico. Based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a poor neighborhood in Mexico City , the paper examines the social conditions of "clientelistic practices" and the interpretations of "clients" and "brokers", in order to clarify the power relations, the distribution of resources, the role of the leader and the alternatives of action available to the poor in urban areas. This work analyzes the changes in clientelistic practices since Mexican elections became competitive, including the resulting alliances and compromises, the relation between needs, politics and legitimacy, as well as the possibilities of autonomy for low-income residents.

Keywords : political clientelism; urban poor; political culture.
