Resumen

GUILLEN, Diana. Electoral violence: A Look at the ambiguities of Mexican democracy. Alteridades [online]. 2025, vol.35, n.70, pp.67-78.  Epub 24-Oct-2025. ISSN 2448-850X.  https://doi.org/10.24275/whnm6250.

The objective of the article is to analyze the contrast between the enlargement of citizen participation/representation spaces through the ballot box and its possible constraint by means of violent resources. Based on systematizations that produced aggregate figures under different parameters it is documented how during the 2023-2024 process, especially at the municipal level, acts of intimidation and direct assaults -homicides included- have been on the rise, challenging the hypothesis that a more robust electoral democracy points in the opposite direction. While these practices did not have an impact in the general results, their upward trend reveals democratic nuances that go beyond isolated cases. The challenge remains open to identify until where said scenario alters the political balance, the interests at stake and the context in which this occurs, a task for which inputs are only just beginning to emerge, allowing for the combination of particular contexts with structuring trends.

Palabras llave : alternate domains; fractured societies; insecurity; 2023-2024 process.
