The Tsotsil community of the La Candelaria municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, decided to seek legal recognition of their indigenous self-governance: Tsomvanejetik Taj jLumaltik. From Colectivo Emancipaciones we have been accompanying the authorities of La Candelaria in this process. Through militant ethnography, framed in the decolonized research of militant legal anthropology, this article responds to questions about what the role of community is; which are the militant and subaltern legal practices in legal recognition; and what are the contributions and challenges for the construction of a critical legal pedagogy in the teaching of law.
