MENDOZA-ZARATE, Gabriel. Communities in motion: Autonomy in Chiapas and territorial defense by the Modevite. Alteridades [online]. 2025, vol.35, n.69, pp.25-37.  Epub 25-Ago-2025. ISSN 2448-850X.  https://doi.org/10.24275/rswk3272.

The article analyzes the trajectory of the Movimiento en Defensa de la Vida y del Territorio (Modevite)’s struggle in Chiapas, Mexico. The Modevite is an indigenous collective that combines territorial defense with the advocacy for autonomy and self-governance. Using an activist research methodology, based on the pragmatic sociology of critique and the dialogue of knowledge, it reconstructs Modevite’s transition from territorial resistance to the establishment of community governments. The findings highlight the need for an intercultural statehood that articulates the indigenous worldview with the political-legal demands for self-determination, autonomy, and self-governance.
