In this essay, I propose analyzing enforced disappearances as a mode of power/ knowledge. Through an analysis of two atypical cases of forced disappearance -El Salvador and Spain- I argue that we should treat local understandings of enforced disappearance as the product of diverse social disciplinary techniques. In other words, scholars should analyze the disappeared through the lens of both the context in which it is deployed and the subjectivities it enables.
