ZAMORANO VILLARREAL, Claudia C.. From the Monument of the Mother Oil to The Monolith: Production of the urban space, codes and memory. Alteridades [online]. 2010, vol.20, n.39, pp.29-40. ISSN 2448-850X.
This paper will focus on the production and transformation of urban spaces and their codes in a neighborhood built in 1936 in eastern Mexico City. My emphasis is on a public garden and the Monument of the Mother Oil that used to be in its center. A school ivas built in the center and in 1946 and the monument ivas lost and only recovered but so badly damaged in 1992 that its discoverers nicknamed it "The Monolith". In seeking to understand what ivas overshadowed and erased from the urban landscape and the human memory had revealed the interplay of three factors: institutional production of urban space and their codes, the inhabitants' appropriation of those spaces, and the urban memory.
Palabras llave : modern architecture; production and appropriation of space; urban codes; urban memory.
