Within the current rediscovery of Jane Addams’s pragmatist philosophy, this paper reconstructs her ideas on democracy and social ethics in the light of the epistemic approach to democracy as it has been developed within the field of contemporary political epistemology. It is argued that, given Addams’s view of democracy as a kind of inquiry guided by social ethics, her most interesting contribution is her idea of sympathetic knowledge, insofar as it broadens moral perspectives, relates the intellectual and the practical dimension of politics, and promotes and strengthens the epistemic capacities of democracy: diversity, discussion, and dynamism.
