LOPEZ-SANDOVAL, José Antonio et al. Morphological characterization and response to germination of Rumex mexicanus Meisn. seeds. Acta univ [online]. 2026, vol.36, e4686. Epub 07-Ago-2026. ISSN 2007-9621. https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2026.4686.
Rumex mexicanus Meisn. is a wild species used for food and medicinal purposes; however, the dormancy of its seeds limits its integration into cropping systems. The objective was to characterize the seeds of Rumex mexicanus Meisn. and evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments on viability and germination, in order to identify strategies for seedling production. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse under a completely randomized block design. The seeds were ovoid in shape and showed a high percentage of viability according to the tetrazolium chloride test. The most effective treatments were: T1) soaking in water at room temperature for 24 h and T3) mechanical scarification (cutting opposite the caruncular scar), which induced germination of over 90%, beginning between six and eight days after sowing. These results provide effective methods for the propagation of Rumex mexicanus Meisn. and its integration into cultivation systems.
