Abstract

Mining plays an important role in the Mexican economy, with Sonora standing out as one of the main producers. The amendment of the Mining Law and the creation of LitioMx underscore the strategic importance of lithium for the country. Bacadéhuachi, Sonora, has gained prominence due to a recent discovery of lithium, attracting diverse stakeholders. The research seeks to assess the community's capacity to cope with the impacts of this mining activity. Using a sequential mixed research design, it was found that Bacadéhuachi displays low resilience to lithium mining, because neither has it been informed of the findings and potential impacts, nor considered in the decision-making process; it is uninformed and disoriented about how to engage in lithium mining activities and actions, highlighting the need to establish mechanisms to trigger transformative resilience and effective local development.
