In a self-proclaimed information and knowledge society, educational technology continues to gain prominence in Mexican educational spaces, owing to the didactic potential of information and communication technology (ICT). Among these digital tools is the virtual forum. However, after so many years, the following question arises: Is it still useful and functional? To address this question, a mixed-methods research approach was employed to evaluate its didactic usefulness in the university context. This study involved both students and teachers, and the results indicate that the virtual forum remains as a functional tool to achieve learning outcomes when used with pedagogical foundations and within the framework of learning and knowledge technologies (LKT). However, the main area for improvement is the quantitative evaluation of student’s participation and social interaction.
