Abstract

MARIN GUTIERREZ, Braulio Cesar; MAGANA MAGANA, Miguel Ángel; AGUILAR URQUIZO, Edgar  and  MAY RODRIGUEZ, Joselyn Alejandra. Main socioeconomic characteristics of beekeeping in the municipality of Champotón, Campeche, in 2023. Acta univ [online]. 2025, vol.35, e4209.  Epub Aug 12, 2025. ISSN 2007-9621.  https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2025.4209.

The municipality of Champotón is the main honey producer in Campeche. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the main socioeconomic characteristics of beekeepers, as well as the degree of association between these and hive ownership. Information was obtained through interviews based on a stratified statistical sampling survey. Producers were grouped into four strata: up to 50 hives, from 51 to 100, from 101 to 150, and more than 150 hives. It was found that beekeeping is the second most important activity; that most producers are elderly and have extensive experience in the activity, with basic schooling; and that their average production capacity is supported by 71 hives, distributed in four apiaries. The main variable that influenced the number of hives was the organized producer, from which they obtain advantages in the purchase of inputs and sale of products.

Keywords : Beekepping; honey; organization; beehive keeping.
