Abstract

AMADOR SIERRA, Judith et al. The role of women in local development intervention projects in rural communities: the case of a water and sanitation program in the community of El Carrizo, Durango, Mexico, in the period 2010-2015. Acta univ [online]. 2024, vol.34, e4275.  Epub Mar 07, 2025. ISSN 2007-9621.  https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2024.4275.

This study examines women's participation in the local development program “Manejo Integral de Cuencas Hidrográficas” of the WWF-FGRA alliance in El Carrizo, Durango, Mexico. It assesses how their participation contributed to the success of the program and to the modification of gender structures in the community. Using a mixed methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants and leaders, in addition to a review of reports collected throughout the year 2023. The results showed that, although women initially had caregiving roles, they began to manage actions within the program. Migration of men to the United States led to women taking on traditionally male roles, which presented challenges but strengthened bonding social capital and reciprocity. The study concludes that women's participation in local development projects is key to gender equity and community sustainability, although additional efforts are needed to address women's dual presence and gender discrimination.
