The competency-based approach seems to be a viable alternative to evaluate research learning in the short and medium term. The objective of the study is to describe the research skills and experiences of Mexican higher education students and their stability over time. It is a mixed study in three stages: in the first stage, a questionnaire was applied to 151 Mexican students; in the second stage a qualitative evaluation was carried out on a group at the end of a Research Methodology course; and in the third stage, these students were followed up a year later. The competence most developed by the participants was the methodological domain, the lowest scores were presented in the domain of oral communication and written communication, while the one-year follow-up shows that the students maintained the acquired competencies. It is necessary to emphasize the development of communicative competencies in research courses and establish systematic monitoring of their learning.
