Abstract

AVILA SANCHEZ, Héctor. Urban and periurban agriculture: a geographical approach. Invest. Geog [online]. 2004, n.53, pp.98-121. ISSN 2448-7279.

This paper reviews and discusses various concepts related to the existence of periurban areas as evidence of the restructuring of the territory within a global context. The practice of periurban agriculture is highlighted as one persisting activity that remains within this symbiotic environment. The need to conduct research from Economic and specially Rural Geography perspectives is laid out, given that periurban agriculture represents a new expression of production in a concrete territory that involves territorial readjustments, mutations and requalification.

Keywords : Periurbanization; urban and periurban agriculture; territorial mutation; territorial requalification.
