Cattle grazing in the state of Sonora are one of the most traditional economic activities and give people a sense of identity. The state is one of the main bovine producers at the national level and it is recognized for its high quality products. It is considered that draught is one of the main problems that the ranchers face in Sonora. The aim of this article is to analyze the problem of draught for the cattle extensive production system in Sonora and the viability to adopt strategies to mitigate its negative effects, from the perspective of the responsibility of the ranchers in range management. The article touch upon the concept of draught, historical indicators of draught in Sonora, the productive practices in relation to range management, recommended measurements to confront draught and their viability. This article presents concepts, statistics and responses from ranchers in relation to draught phenomena.
