Among the current new initiatives for environmental protection and preservation in Mexico, there is a program aiming to pay for environmental services in key areas with ecological value. One of these cases is San Andrés Tuxtla, in the state of Veracruz, where payment by itself does not represents a sustainable economic option for owners, thus social recognition must also be intended. The objective of this study was to ascertain the forest and other alternatives landscapes value, has for the population receiving its benefits as retained water. Using the contingent value method 241 interviews was conducted, and photos of landscapes other than rainforest were ranked according to its relevance to the economy and preservation. A positive willingness to pay for preserving the canopy was associated with some demographics such as age, education, and income. Data show that payment must include economic values such as opportunity costs and reforestation as well as social recognition.
