Abstract

CESANA, Raffaele. Sergio Ugalde Quintana, Philology, Creation, and Life: Alfonso Reyes and Literary Studies. Mexico City: El Colegio de México / Autonomous University of Nuevo León, 2024. Lit. mex [online]. 2025, vol.36, n.2, pp.181-185.  Epub Jan 06, 2026. ISSN 2448-8216.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex/36.2.2025/001wx254107s69.

One of the substantial, yet underappreciated, virtues of the essay is perseverance. The book Philology, Creation, and Life: Alfonso Reyes and Literary Studies, published by Sergio Ugalde Quintana in the spring of 2024, represents apt proof of this assertion. The culmination of a hermeneutic movement that its author generated in Germany between 2015 and 2017, the essay reviewed here reveals, among its qualities, that of being the expression of tenacious and resilient intellectual work; the product of a writer who interprets his object of study without ever deviating from it and remaining steadfast in the concretization of his critical aspirations. In fact, it is perhaps, above all, due to this capacity for perseverance that the author achieves two appreciable results.

Keywords : Alfonso Reyes; Ugalde; philology.
