Through a political reading of El luto humano by José Revueltas, this article proposes a reading of the colonization of Mexican territory initiated by the Conquest and continued by the agrarian modernity designed by the Mexican Revolution. Through the light of essays and autobiographical notes by the same author, as well as sociological perspectives of that period, my approach will reveal how the territory, since colonial times, is not fairly distributed among those who actually labour it. This distance jeopardizes the quality of citizenship of the indigenous and peasant population, since they are not recognized as subjects of law or even as members of the nation. The state and other economic apparatuses that cancel their pressence become an obstacle for indigenous people and peasants to hold onto the land, literally and metaphorically
