Abstract

FLORES, Enrique. “Sobre los daños del deseo.” An incantation by Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón. Lit. mex [online]. 2017, vol.28, n.1, pp.9-37. ISSN 2448-8216.

Some of the incantations compiled by Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón in his Tratado de las supersticiones y costumbres gentílicas (1629) correspond to the “disseases and sicknesses that come from illicit love affairs”, and more precisely, to “harm caused by love and desire”. This article analyses those sexual incantations from two points of view: that of ethnopoetics, with the strictly poetic problems emerging from Alarcón’s medical and magical incantations, and as an attempt, that of an ethnopsycoanalysis in search of the roots of the death drive.

Keywords : incantations; magic; aztecs; Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón; baroque.
