The article analyzes the impact of the integrated steel company Altos Hornos de Mexico’s closure in the city of Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico. It seeks to answer the question of why Monclova’s economy did not collapse in the face of the closure of its main industrial engine, around which the economy of the central region of Coahuila revolved. To this end, a series of hypotheses are proposed, based on the monitoring conducted over the years, in different fieldwork stays, as well on secondary information. This research is part of the long tradition of studying industrial enclaves, restructuring, and deindustrialization, observing the social costs and regional repercussions.
