Abstract

HERRERA JURADO, Bryam. Gino Germani and Hugo Ratier: Early racism studies in Argentina. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2025, vol.87, n.2, pp.341-367.  Epub May 02, 2025. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2025.2.62740.

This article analyzes the early contributions made by Gino Germani and Hugo Ratier to the racism studies in Argentina. It describes the different roles given by the authors to racism in the class structure and examines the limits and continuities that these positions had in the subsequent debate on racism, from the 1990s onwards. The study suggests that Ratier locates racism primarily in class relationships and Germani in a cultural dimension, inaugurating two traditions of racism studies in Argentina and a problematic dichotomy between economy and culture.

Keywords : Gino Germani; Hugo Ratier; race; racism; ethnicity.
