Abstract

ESCOBAR GONZALEZ, Inés  and  GONZALEZ DE LA ROCHA, Mercedes. Poverty and housing in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 1980 to 2020. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2024, vol.86, n.4, pp.935-961.  Epub Nov 22, 2024. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2024.4.62667.

Access to housing has always been a problem in Mexico, but paradigmatic changes have also occurred. A diachronic analysis of poor urban households’ conditions and strategies for acquiring housing, from self-construction to ownership based on mortgage debt, emphasizes how changes in housing policy exacerbated the trend toward resource depletion and social isolation. Focusing on the role of women in these two scenarios, this analysis clarifies the implications of self-built housing and financial inclusion for the wellbeing of low-income households.

Keywords : urban poverty; housing; gender; financial inclusion; assets; Mexico.
