Abstract

HERNANDEZ GUTIERREZ, José Carlos  and  LOPEZ RODRIGUEZ, Guillermo. Impact of organized crime on Michoacán’s elections. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2024, vol.86, n.4, pp.811-839.  Epub Nov 22, 2024. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2024.4.62663.

In Michoacán, during the 2020-2021 elections, organized crime influenced candidates and voters. This qualitative study explores local actors’ perceptions through semi-structured interviews regarding these dynamics. It investigates the motivations behind criminal actions and the impact of violence on electoral behavior. Findings indicate that economic motivations are the primary cause of criminal intervention, with no partisan patterns in the violence. Additionally, coercion and bribery are common methods used to pressure voters.
