VARGAS CERVANTES, Susana. Pigmentocracy in Mexico: between whiteness, blanquedad, blanquitud and blancura. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2024, vol.86, n.3, pp.691-716. Epub 09-Ago-2024. ISSN 2594-0651. https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2024.3.62609.
Race as an epistemological project is closely linked to Western thought. In Mexico it is defined through mestizaje and in the United States through slavery. This article analyzes the relationship between whiteness in English and blanquedad, blanquitud, y blancura in Spanish and proposes to redefine our understanding of pigmentocracy as a performative method that goes beyond a pigment and is more aligned with perceptions. In this way, it reveals the tensions that exist between mestizaje based on the identification/self-identification of the subject, and the nationalist and epistemological project of mestizaje.
