Abstract

ZAMORANO ROMERO, Cosme  and  PALACIOS ALQUISIRA, Joaquín. PET drying contrasting microwave and electric ovens. Educ. quím [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.2, pp.212-223.  Epub Aug 28, 2023. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2023.2.83273.

This paper reviews the thermodynamic concepts of First Law of Thermodynamics and heat and how they are applied to calculate the energy required for drying. To this end, the energy required for PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) flake drying using an electric oven and a microwave oven is compared. Practical, helpful work in high school and first chemical engineering courses is presented. The experimental data arose from tests conducted in the laboratory and corroborated elsewhere (Hernández, 2006). They were obtained for PET flakes from soft drink bottles; they had the same physicochemical properties. From the observed results, it can be concluded that the microwave treatment of PET reduces energy consumption compared to the electric oven.

Keywords : Heat; microwave; saving of energy; drying; PET.
