To mark the centenary of the death of Dimitri Mendeleev in 2007 Eric Scerri published the highly successful The Periodic Table: Its Story and Its Significance. Now Scerri, one of the fathers of contemporary philosophy of chemistry, provides a (not so) short introduction to the periodic table. Far from being a mere synthesis of the above, the author corrected misprints, added a chapter devoted to the synthesis of transuranic elements, updated his always provocative position and extended the discussion on the most debated topic: the different forms of the periodic table.
