Given that quality of teaching is a key factor in the quality of education, education systems need to have reliable mechanisms and rigorous assessment to identify the strengths and weaknesses of teachers. This article presents an overview of the purpose and content of instruments of teacher evaluation in order to establish elements to think about as desirable to take place in countries like ours, to ensure that each classroom has an adequately trained teacher. It emphasizes the idea that teacher evaluation should always be used to improve teaching, providing appropriate feedback to teachers on their practice and ways to improve. It also questions the use of measures of student achievement as an indicator of teacher effectiveness.
