Inquiry is tried to be defined, facing troubles with the different meanings for inquiry that have been employed, and a historical outlook of the concept is presented, starting with Dewey, then with Schwab, the National Science Education Standards and some recent research papers that deal with the point, trying to develop a set of abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry in the classroom or the laboratory.
