Resumen
VAZQUEZ RAMOS, Jorge M. y PLASENCIA DE LA PARRA, Javier. Not all extremes are bad, the case of telomeres. Educ. quím [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.1, pp.96-98. ISSN 0187-893X.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was given to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack Szostak for their discovery of chromosomal telomeres and the mechanism by which the enzyme telomerase synthesizes and protects telomeres after each DNA replication cycle. This is a conserved mechanism in eukaryotic cells, which possess a true nucleus, and the length of telomeres and telomerase activity have important implications in ageing, degenerative diseases and cancer.
