The reactions of sodium and potassium with liquid nitrogen(IV) oxide were performed to check the nature of the product, that was claimed (Nekrasov, 1976) to be MNO₃ (M = Na, K). Both classical chemical reactions and FT-IR spectrometry were used in the course of its analysis. It was proved that the product was indeed nitrate, sometimes containing nitrites as impurities.
