In recent years there has been an increase in plants with green stem syndrome of soybean (Glycine max) in the southern region of Paraguay, without studying the origin of this phenomenon. Under the hypothesis that green stem syndrome of the soybean is influenced by the source/sink relationship, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pod removal on green stem syndrome of the soybean. The experiment was carried out under field conditions in the 2016/2017 and 2019/2020 seasons in the Tomás Romero and Carlos Antonio López districts, respectively, both in the Department of Itapúa, Paraguay. The experimental design used was randomized complete blocks with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were the pod retention percentages of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 %. At the beginning of seed formation (R5) the number of pods was quantified and they were manually removed according to the percentages corresponding to each treatment. The variables evaluated were the number of retained leaves per plant, percentage of green stems, percentages of green pods, weight of 100 grains, grain moisture and yield. As pod retention levels decrease, the number of leaves retained increases, the percentage of green stems and pods and the weight of 100 grains increase. Yield increases with a quadratic trend as the percentage of retained pods increases.
