Abstract

SOLIS PEREZ, Marlene. The Symbolic Construction of a Feminized Labor Market in Tangier: A First Consideration. Frontera norte [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.43, pp.55-80. ISSN 2594-0260.

This article analyzes the symbolic construction of labor markets in apparel firms in Tangier, Morocco. The point of departure is the idea that in order to face the emptiness that individualization, pluralism, and life-world fragmentation cause, intermediate institutions are needed to guide the actions of individuals. Civic organizations are conceived of as intermediate institutions that challenge the direction of the actions of women who are working in firms that have relocated to this border city. These civic organizations, through their practices and discourses- including resistance, integration and exclusion-contribute to the construction of these labor markets.

Keywords : Apparel industry; woman and work; civil organizations; Border; Tangier.
