After presenting the characteristics and functions of the scientific article, this paper analyzes the role of illustrations in formal scientific communication within the framework of existing technology for the creation of scientific images and data and information visualization. Results of an analysis of research articles in the Biological Science published in Nature and Science in 2003, are presented.
