Abstract
ARVIZU REYNAGA, Alma Vanessa. Young People Working in the Popular Economy in Mexico City’s Subway. An Analysis of Time Management and Social Inequalities. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2022, vol.37, n.106, pp.123-156. Epub Sep 01, 2023. ISSN 2007-8358.
This article analyzes how young men and women who work in the popular economy (sales and services) in Mexico City’s subway system manage their time to be able to deal with job, family, and educational responsibilities. The author used a qualitative methodology to do twenty-one interviews with people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine. She found that these young people work in the popular (informal) economy because it is one of the few job options on offer, whether it be to start out in their working life, because it provides the flexibility they need to combine it with other responsibilities, or because they have disadvantages such as high poverty levels, less schooling, or small networking.
